SMU notebook deals 2008/2009

By Darius Chang

It may be the youngest university in Singapore, with a history of less than a decade. However, with a comprehensive business program and a campus in the heart of the central business district, it is certainly no benchwarmer compared with its older siblings.

However, it's campus purchase program is limiting, to say the least. You want an ultraportable, get a Fujitsu. Need a more powerful mid-size machine? Then you have a choice of Fujitsu. Looking for a thin-and-light to carry on the bus? You guessed it, there is only Fujitsu available.

Fortunately, though only one brand is available, there is an option between getting the latest Centrino 2 machine, or buying the earlier Centrino laptop for a little less. Moreover, with significant discounts across the board, we doubt anyone will be complaining.

Note:
  • This information is based on notebook deals currently offered to the staff and students of Singapore Management University (SMU). However, conditions apply for those who have previously purchased notebooks under this scheme.
  • Do note that the models we reviewed may not have the exact same configurations as the models being offered for campus use. For example, the SMU Fujitsu LifeBook S7211 featured has a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T8100 processor whereas the retail unit incorporates a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 chip.
  • Prices exclude 7 percent GST and are correct as of July 28, 2008. Please check with the campus notebook center for more information.
  • Street prices are compared with the base model available to students.
