HP mixes business with pleasure

By

A recent survey revealed a stunning discovery that, most of the time, corporate-issued notebooks are used not for business but pleasure. Emailing and Internet browsing, which are the most common work-related computing tasks, can be accomplished by PDAs and smart phones far easier and more conveniently. Data entry and extended typing are a pain on smaller keyboards usually found on notebooks.

This angel needs a powerful notebook to present her naughty and nice list.
Recognizing this trend, HP has revealed its new line of business laptops which combine work and play. This was showcased during the recent Hong Kong product launch at Disneyland, though details of the machines were embargoed till now. The high-end model, the HP Compaq nx9420, is claimed by the company as the lightest 17-inch display notebook in the market, and at 3.36kg, we believe it is not far off the mark. For executives who believe portable machines should not require the strength of Samson for long distance hauls, the HP Compaq nx6320 is lighter in both weight and functions. Key features of both models are:
  • Long battery life.
  • Biometric fingerprint scanner, SmartCard slot and Trusted Platform Module security chip.
  • Spill-proof keyboard.
  • Internal magnesium-alloy cage (similar to Lenovo ThinkPads).
  • Scratch-resistant laminated keyboard and icons (for those who like to wear unfriendly metal wristwatches).
  • HP Panel Protection System to preserve the LCD display.
  • HP Mobile Data Protection which prevents hard drive data corruption in the event of a drop.
  • Optional high-capacity 12-cell battery attachment which extends unplugged use by up to 10 hours.

The nx9420 notebook's 17-inch brillant transflective display is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 video card with 256MB of dedicated graphics memory. Suitable for gaming and high-definition movies, the nx9420 is not all play and no work. The full-size keyboard with its discrete number pad makes data entry a breeze and, for the first time in HP notebooks, uses a special three-dimensional accelerometer which can detect sudden impact from any direction. The claimed 4-hour battery life is also exceptional for a 17-inch display system.

Weighing in at 2.8kg (for a 15-inch display), the HP Compaq nx6320 is a more portable system which incorporates serious data security features and a claimed 5-hour battery life. With more customizable options, from the display to the processor, this line gives enterprise users the flexibility to tailor a notebook based on their needs.

The HP Compaq nx9420 is available this month while the nx6320 will start shipping in early April.
