MotoMusic online service opens in Singapore

By Damian Koh

SINGAPORE--Motorola today officially announced its music download service MotoMusic with over 750,000 songs, videos and ringtones. The US company acquired music provider Soundbuzz headquartered in Singapore to manage this service in January this year.

The songs will come with Windows Media DRM which is similar to Nokia's approach with its online music store that debuted in late April. Each track will cost S$1.99, while videos are priced at S$4 when downloaded on the PC. Songs purchased over-the-air via WAP directly onto the handset will cost S$2.50 per title.

Users will be able to transfer a music or video file to a portable music player or burn them to a CD up to three times. However, music from EMI can be burned to a CD only twice.

According to Motorola, the service is not specific to the phone-maker and is compatible with handsets from other brands.

The company also showcased five phones including the 5-megapixel camera-phone ZINE ZN5 and touchscreen smart phone MING A1600. The EM330, W388 and VE538 made up the rest of the portfolio at the event. These handsets will either have a dedicated MotoMusic icon or a short hyperlink bookmark in the phone's browser to make accessing the store more convenient.
