Apple iPhone 3G in Asia

By Damian Koh

We know it's hard to keep track of everything that's happening in Asia about the iPhone 3G. So we've put together the most important news and trivia that you should know about. You'll also find information about the various price plans offered by the carriers in the countries the handset will be available in over the next few pages. So get clicking.

Apple iPhone 3G

CNET Asia rating: 8.3 out of 10
The good: Offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded email; improved call quality is improved; continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience.
The bad: Continues to lack some basic features that are available on even the simplest cell phone; also, we prefer the original iPhone's design.
The bottom line: The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper performance. The iTunes Apps Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. We still have a few gripes, but the iPhone 3G a big improvement over the original model.

You guys should put a big disclaimer on the price cause those are the subsidized prices of the iPhone. If I'm not mistaken I believe AT&T is planning to release a "no-commitment version" of the phone in the future for $599 and $699 respectively. Since the $199 and $299 price points were for the US and, I believe, the rest of the world through carrier subsidies, then I wouldn't be surprised to find unlocked versions through Apple Stores for the higher prices. Then again, they're unlocked so you'd expect to pay more anyway.

Let me correct that, it's not just a plan, it's confirmed! Well, for a lot of us, it may be a good thing but some may still opt for a unit with contract.

So what about Indonesia? Are they ever going to sell the iPhone here? With exchange compatibility it could be a real competitor to Nokia. Anyone have any 'dood oil' on that?

So the iPhone will launched around the price of the HTC Diamond and the Samsung Omnia i900.

Singapore is Sept 1. I got this snippet from one of my "regular" phone vendors (who just happens to be pretty attractive too - nice for the long chats about the relative merits of various plans and models) and I have already asked for one to be reserved.

Additionally, I know of one company who has had its hands on a couple of demo uinits for testing/application development.

For the record, I DID have one of the previous versions, LOVED it and LOST it in the back of a cab in Singapore. Guess what... it was history 20 minutes after I realised I had left it in the back of the cab. Sigh....

If the price plan is reasonable with Singtel, it's a no brainer to get one. Don't mind a contract of a year, 2 years is pushing it and 3 years will be a joke. If that happens, i'll just get a jailbreak version.

Hi,
For India, Airtel & Vodaphone have started bookings, no price mentioned as of now. The rumours are that there will not be any subsidy by the operators and this may increase the price on offer to over 500USD equivalent.

Cheers!
