Made the jump on this new model!
Mar 17, 2008 04:13 AM
Although I started out looking for a good deal on the 46W300s, I was persuaded by my dealer to go for the W400s instead. Not only was it cheaper, as noted in Wong's review, it definitely looked better than its predecessor. Made the jump and bought this model last weekend.Very impressed with it so far. Definitely a step up from my Sharp 37BX5M. Perfect, even backlighting. No signs of clouding or smearing so far on a variety of materials ranging from sports to movies (viewing time less than 20hours). Have not tried any HD material (only upscaled DVDs and cable broadcasts) as yet but one striking feature was how well the new Bravia Engine 2 handles SD material. The intelligent signal enhancer seems to be working well. I've turned off all noise/mpeg reduction and the image on normal broadcasts is still usable.
One thing that strikes me early on is that the colours seem too vibrant to be real (default) but I can't help wondering if the lack of x.v.color is contributing to it. Turned off wide colour and moved most settings on the advanced menu to either low or off. This has helped a bit but until I get my Spyder TV, this is the best I can do for now.
Will play around with the settings a bit more in the coming weeks. My other AV equipment should come in the next week or so and I can't wait to run some HD/upscaled DVD material on it. Though I think there aren't that many of you who have the new W400s yet (my set's serial number is 1000026! - made in Malaysia), I'd appreciate any recommendations on the settings!
more details on the W400A?
Apr 9, 2008 07:52 PM
Hi there! I am interested in buying the European equivalent of the W400A (W4000 is called down here). Since you seem to be the only ones to have this model (for the moment), I hope you can help me with a few questions:1. Any idea of what are the improvements in the Bravia Engine 2?
2. The reviews of the previous model often mentioned an "average picture processing" and the prevalence of ghosting or judder in fast moving objects. This was mainly due to the lack of the 100 Mhz and "motion flow" (almost standard from other manufacturers), which in Europe are reserved for Sony's X series. Has this been improved in the W400A? Have you watched a tennis or a football match on it? Can you read properly scrolling text (like in CNN or CNBC)?
3. What about the "picture frame mode"?
Please help with details!
Thanks!
