The fierce competition in the home theater display market has not deterred ViewSonic from making a late entry into the 1080p projector market. Its pilot attempt, the Pro8100, is a stylish piece with quite a commendable feature set and tech specifications. How does it stack up against offerings from the remaining players? Here's our take on what's hot and not for this spanking new 3LCD-based light cannon.

Design

The Pro8100 is big. Really, very big. (insert Douglas Adams joke here). This is not the occasional projector you pull out of the cupboard and plonk on your coffee table. At a width of almost 600mm, this fella needs his own home: Ceiling mounting or a high shelf would be best.

The projector comes in black as standard, but you can also buy three other colored skins to suit your living space: Grey, white and burgundy. However, given how huge this thing is we think that most installers and users would rather hide it in an enclosure than draw attention to it with a bright, burgundy covering.

The remote itself has similar proportions to the new iPod nano, being quite short and squat. It fits well in the hand, though. The remote is backlit and comes with several pictographic buttons for most settings, such as aspect ratio and keystoning.
