King Kong-pod strikes again

Damian Koh  |  Jul 13, 2006

Okay, we didn't mean to make fun of the Joby's Gorillapod, but we can't resist associating this portable tripod for compact cameras with the all-almighty ape. If that isn't enough, the company has also released an SLR version of the Gorillapod.

Unlike King Kong which uses its four limbs to traverse Skull Island, the Gorillapods have only three "legs" to contend with. Each of these "legs" has flexible joints with rubber grips, so the tripod can be wrapped around anything. Well, almost.

Similar to its younger sibling, the Gorillapod SLR weighs 165g, measures 250 x 50 x 50mm and is able to support an SLR or video camera of up to 1.1kg. The camera is connected to the pod via a universal 1/4-20 screw mount. There's also a lock ring to make sure your camera stays on the tripod--that is if your three-legged machine isn't the one falling off the roof in the first place.

While we won't see King Kong scaling our skyscrapers anytime soon, the Gorillapods look fun enough to play with, which could be potentially useful for demanding shooting conditions.
