The good: Ultracompact design; long battery life; excellent burst capabilities; low shutter lag; versatile movie mode.

The bad: Few manual controls or scene modes; image quality is far from stellar.

The bottom line: Decent image quality and a well-rounded snapshot feature set make the high-performance ultracompact Canon Digital IXUS 55 one of the better choices in the current IXUS lineup.

Great value for money. Quality is superb.

Rating: 9 out of 10 (Spectacular)
Pros: Size, speed and quality
Cons: Battery life
Opinion:
This is my fourth digital camera. My first was a Pentax Optio 30 (or something like that). Did not last too long. Died shortly after warranty. Went for 1 repair (cost SGD 200+). Died again. Decided to go for the IXUS 400. Great product and still working after >2 years. Was also given a Casio EX-S100 - batter life is good but quality is so-so. Wanted a good slim camera and compared the Panasonic (bigger), Sony (Proprietary Memory Card), and the Canon S80 (too bulky). The IXUS 55 produces almost the same quality video and photo as the S80 and is much more affordable. Haven't regretted so far.

Small and compact, but very capable!

Opinion:
I was looking for a lightweight and small camera for occasions that I would leave behind my dSLR if I decided to travel light. I narrowed my choices to IXUS 55 & Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1, though they are of different price range and features. Played with them both on the day of my purchase and compared them side by side. Decided to go for IXUS 55 because the more expensive Pana DMC-LX1 couldn't even do close-up properly though I've switched it to macro mode! But it was a snap for this IXUS when I used it to focus the same object at close range, spot on in 1 sec! Other than this, I like the fast startup, low noise image and spot metering. The 2.5" LCD is superb. Downside - no battery power display. The one-line low battery warning is very dumb and needs reworking by Canon engineers.
