How to select a Fujifilm FinePix camera

By Leonard Goh

Long-time imaging giant Fujifilm is celebrating its 74th anniversary this year, and it is made more special because it also marks its 10th year in the digital imaging business. The first FinePix was announced in 1998 and it has undergone several revamps over the last decade.

For Fujifilm, the brand FinePix is associated with quality. "Pix" in the name stands for both pictures and pixels, meaning that the images captured with its shooters are of "fine quality".

The 8th iteration of the Super CCD.
The Japanese company pioneered several firsts--the S6500fd was the first shooter to sport face detection technology (now into its third generation), while the F100fd and S100FS have a whopping 400 percent increase in dynamic range to distinguish them from the rest of the pack. But what we think really makes the cameras special are their ability to perform in low-light photography, an area other manufacturers have grasp. One equation in its formula, Fujifilm said, is the Super CCD which is into its 8th iteration.

The knowledge acquired while developing film helped Fujifilm deliver accurate and stunning colors, which are important aspects of photography.

In the past, Fujifilm competed against other film manufacturers. While most of them have since faded into the background after the digital revolution, the firm managed not only to adapt to a new environment, but also thrived in it. The rationale for its success is simple: "Embrace technology, and stay ahead of the challenge."

If you've set your eyes on a Fujifilm point-and-shoot but aren't quite sure which one is suitable for you, we've put together a comprehensive guide for this series.
