Compact cameras with big screens

By Leonard Goh

We all know that familiar moment where, after taking a group photo, everyone crowds around you and tries to get a glimpse of the picture. But the screen is so small anyone could have missed out the details. To your horror, you discover that Uncle Fred's eyes are closed only after you have made the print. Oh well. Give these five compacts some consideration. With a larger screen, viewing and framing a picture are going to be far easier.

1.  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300

CNET Asia rating: 7.6 out of 10
The good: Fast performance; tons of handy image editing and playback features; zoom rocker is in a much more comfortable position.
The bad: Soft, noisy photos.
The bottom line: A great design, fast shooting, and lots of features can't overcome the fact that the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 simply doesn't take very good pictures.

Screen size: 3.5 inch

2.  Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX520

CNET Asia rating: 8 out of 10
The good: Stylish design; intuitive 3-inch touchscreen; manual exposure control; 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens; improved image quality.
The bad: Slow startup time; Face Detection didn't recognize faces with spectacles; oddly shaped stylus.
The bottom line: Besides the startup time and stylus, it is hard to find fault with the FX520. Image quality has also improved and we really like the features that are incorporated with the touchscreen.

The good: Stylish retro design; optical image stabilizer; fast auto focus
The bad: Scroll wheel not intuitive; high noise level above ISO 800
The bottom line: Despite a paucity of features, the IXUS 90 feels substantial, thanks to its sturdy build, quirky controls, large screen and respectable picture quality.

The good: Brilliant color reproduction, HD video capture, sleek design.

5.  Nikon Coolpix S52c

The aesthetics isn't much of a difference from its predecessor, the S51c, but Nikon's new Wi-Fi-enabled S52c has undergone some minor upgrades like a higher resolution of 9 megapixels and increased ISO sensitivity of 3,200. If you have a my Picturetown account, you can upload your snaps from the point-and-shoot via wireless network to your online album. It comes with the usual fare of face detection, 3x optical zoom and Nikon's proprietary vibration reduction (VR) image stabilization system.
