Pro-sumer baloney needs a better sauce

I met a guy on the train reading Wikinomics. I had Paul Krugman's The Accidental Theorist in hand, so conversation was inevitable. (You're so aware that you share an affinity with the other person beside you, you can't not talk to him. It's one of those situations where it would be more odd to refuse conversation with a stranger.)

Consumer good for the downturn

It's very tedious, this depression. I've spent the last days surfing around trying to make sense of it, and the results have been quite fascinating. The consumer side of things is particularly interesting. Basically, everyone is feeling it, and consumers are going to hang onto their cash instead of throwing it around, which is what everyone has been doing until, well, now.

For the people :D

So they made us read this old, old article about the setup of the speakers corner here in Singers. The speaker's corner is where people can go to to voice their views on some thing or other, preferably not too controversial, and preferably not any sort of criticism about the Government. I'm not so sure about backhanded compliments, but maybe that was also possible.

My X'mas wish

Okay, what I want for Christmas: More performance-enhancing drugs. I love my designer drugs. If we had stuff we could take to really give us better memory, to seriously enhance our ability to analyze things logically and solve problems, to help me work longer and harder and after that feel much better, I'd take all of it.

It's internalizing the technology. We've got this really powerful processing machine inside our head, and we have gadgets and externalized networks to support its functions, but wowow, wouldn't it be way better if we just made use of what we already have?

Short discourse on computers and the economy

I was compelled to do a little presentation on the symbiotic relationship between the development of computing technology and modern finance. Ever since the stockmarket was invented, there have been people out there trying and making the most of the system, for better or for worse. We have many things to thank for the digital experience we have today, but if there is one thing I'd give a salute to, and that's the modern stockmarket.

About Isabella Chen

Isabella Chen is a practising digital artist, working with digital tools to create art and hacking tools to make art. Ironically, she makes a living writing about these tools. Mostly because people seem to be far more interested in how they can use them to create their own content. Before technology exploded in her face, she used to write about social issues. But ever since Chris Anderson let slip that Sillicon Valley was the forefront of culture, she's gone into writing about technology. It's cool, and it drives our lives, and many of us live for it. Plus, there's always the appeal of the intelligent machines that can do your chores for you, and the virtual stimulation machine. Not to be confused with the virtual simulation machine. She has a personal interest in that one.
