Because the revolution will not be televised, but blogged

Thank God for the mobile Internet

Ask people what's the one gadget they can't live without--the one that would send them running back home in case they left it behind--and chances are their answer would be the same as mine: The mobile phone.

It's hard to imagine that not too long ago, a mobile phone was a novelty, and pagers ruled the roost (remember those days?). Cell phones have empowered us in ways we might now take for granted. The mobile phone has always been a trusty tool for me, then as a tech journalist, and now as the head of a multimedia department in one of the leading Philippine online gaming companies.

Have you Plurked your life yet?

See, Twitter, everyone told you those frequent outages would come back to bite you.

The evidence is just anecdotal, but based on my online interaction, many Filipino bloggers now seem to be more active on Plurk rather than Twitter. I remember the shift starting a few months ago when more and more Twitter users here were getting frustrated by Twitter's downtime. You guessed right--we were twittering about being frustrated with Twitter. :) That's too bad for Twitter; after all, as Ignatius Javellana pointed out, Filipinos really are crazy... Internet crazy, and we can have a big impact on the performance of different sites, as seen in the case of Friendster and Multiply.

Babelmachine is back, and the Filipino blogosphere keeps growing

It's been over a year, but I'm finally back blogging for CNET Asia. A lot has happened since I left, not least of all a major career move when I decided to "go corporate" after over a decade as a tech journalist.

I'm now the multimedia head a.k.a. The Catalyst of Level Up! Inc., the PLDT Group's online gaming company, which is the Philippine publisher of titles such as Ragnarok, Perfect World, RF Online, FlyFF, Freestyle, Crazy Kart, and, most recently, Grand Chase.

Why you should bet on online video

I hope you'll forgive the plug, but I just have to share the fact that today the company I work for launched its iVDO online video service in partnership with Yahoo!

It's one of the services I'm handling as our multimedia editor, and I'm really excited over the prospect of doing our share in making online video an established medium for news and other content in the Philippines and among Filipino communities in other countries.

But why should we bet on online video, anyway? Is it really becoming that big here in Asia? Because it's one thing to watch videos online. I love doing that, and I also know that more and more people are watching online as part of their daily habit. It's another thing, however, to create our own content and upload it to a video site. This is what I hope to see. This is what we should all encourage.

Miss Universe and online voting

Like me, some of you might have also been glued to your TV sets watching the Miss Universe 2007 pageant, where Miss Japan Riyo Mori was crowned.

In my case, however, it was business mixed with pleasure since I liveblogged it for, um, Babe Republic. No, really, it was hard work!

At any rate, our own candidate Anna Theresa Licaros failed to advance to the Top 15. This despite great expectations since she was hailed as an example of beauty and brains, a law student who had graduated summa cum laude in broadcast communication from one of our top universities. Licaros, however, won a consolation prize when she was chosen as Miss Photogenic, based on online votes from those who logged onto NBC.com--NBC being the official broadcaster.
