Sony or Panasonic for point-and-shoot?

Sep 25, 2008

Question on Digicams:

I have US$400 to spend and want a good point-and-shoot camera. I have narrowed it down to the Panasonic FZ28 and the Sony H50. I know both have their own plus and minuses, but which one would you buy?

If you're looking at zoom range, then the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 has more reach with an 18x zoom lens, while the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50 has only 15x. What's more the FZ28 has a 27mm wide-angle lens which is useful if you travel frequently and like to take landscape pictures.

LCD-wise, Sony's display is 3 inches and that is slightly larger than the Panasonic's, which measures 2.7 inches. Also, the H50's screen can be tilted to facilitate awkward shooting angles.

With all these in mind, it can be difficult to make a choice between these two cameras. What may be to my liking could be a hassle for you. My best advice for you would be to go to the store and have a good feel of these two shooters. See which camera you feel more comfortable holding, and also which has better ease-of-use. From there, I think it will not that hard to make your decision.
