What's the best budget 42-inch plasma TV?

Sep 14, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

In my quest for the best budget plasma TV, I have zeroed in on the following models available in India:

1. Panasonic 42PV80H
2. Panasonic 42PV8H
3. Panasonic 42PV7H
4. LG 42PG61UR

I will mainly be watching satellite/cable TV broadcast (games and movies for me, soaps for wife and cartoons for kids) and sometime in near future I am planning to buy a Sony PS3.

What is your expert opinion regarding this?

If budget permits, drop the entry-level Panasonic PV7 and PV8 altogether.

We cannot comment on the actual picture quality between the Panasonic PV80 and LG PG61UR since we've not reviewed either units. However, the LG may have an upper hand since it has two times the native contrast than the Panasonic. Do drop by your neighborhood electronics store for a side-by-side comparison.

Hi Philip,

so whats the difference between the 80h and the 8h for panasonic? is it the code for where the TV is made ?

Erneil says...
I think the 80h added an extra HDMI slot and an SD card slot.
It also has a piano black finish frame as compared to the matte
frame of the 8h.

I just bought the PV8H, and Erneil is right, the only differances are minor and feature based.

Picture quality is the same, and thus I didn't want to pay more for the extras.

IMO, its no contest. Pioneer and Panasonic are number 1 n 2 for plasmas (a dying breed). Especially the Panasonic PV8/80, it has stunning picture quality for its price! I highly recommend it!

Here in the Philippines, 42PV8H sells for approx US$1,118.00
while the 42PV80H US$1,242.00
