Onkyo TX-SR506--good with upscaling DVD player?

Aug 19, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

I have a Panasonic 42" plasma (PV500H) and a Pioneer DVD player (DV-400) which can upscale through HDMI. For cable I am using StarHub HD set top box. I am also planning to get a PS3 for my Blu-ray and HD audio needs.

Now keeping the above in mind, is the Onkyo TX-SR506 a right choice or should I instead consider the Onkyo SR606 or some other AV receiver in that budget range?

The speakers the store is offering are either Jamo or Boston. I'm also not sure which one is better.

It seems like you've done your homework since the 506 comes with three HDMIs and multichannel PCM support for PS3's onboard decoded Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD output.

The 606's TrueHD/DTS-HD support is redundant in this case, though it does comes with an extra HDMI port for future expansion. In addition, you may like to stick with high-sensitivity, low-power satellite speakers. These entry-level A/V receivers may not be powerful enough to drive floor-standing speakers.

Lastly, do ask for an audition with the speakers you have in mind.
