OMG! It's a keyboard for blondes

Sharon Vaknin  |  Nov 27, 2008

A fully functional pink keyboard? Perfect!
(Credit: Keyboard for Blondes)

Blondes have suffered decades of ridicule, but it's time they embraced the jokes. When it comes to a hot-pink boost of self-confidence (or at least a few good laughs), the Keyboard for Blondes may do the trick.

The all-pink keyboard swaps out standard keys with funnier, dumber key names. The backspace key now says "Oops!" and the entire row of function keys spells out USELESS KEYS. Hit the "$" sign and you get the sound of a cash register clinking.

Blondes can even get a little technical and use special keys that type out "OMG," "ALI" (Absolutely Love It!), or "XOXO." My favorite? The Caps Lock now says: "Warning! size XXL letters."

Though this fully functional keyboard would be a great gift to poke some fun at your fair-haired friends, regular computer users may find it a bit challenging. However, like the completely blank Das Keyboard, the Keyboard for Blondes might help poor typists improve their skills, since the keys are 1) a distracting pink, and 2) no longer have the standard labels.

According to its manufacturer, European Trends, the keyboard has already been released in the UK to some success, and at US$49.95 probably only a true blonde would purchase this novelty item. It's compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux. I know what Paris Hilton will be getting for Christmas.

Photoshop supports 5D Mark II, camera profiles

Stephen Shankland  |  Nov 27, 2008

Adobe Systems on Monday updated its RAW-image processing software for Photoshop CS4 with support for Canon's higher-end EOS 5D Mark II camera and building in support for the camera profiles that can give images more realistic colors.

The camera profiles, which I strongly recommend people employ, let you change image tones and colors to better match camera settings such as neutral, portrait, and landscape. They'd been released on the Adobe Labs site, but now are officially built into the Adobe Camera Raw 5.2 software and an accompanying utility, DNG Converter for changing cameras' proprietary RAW files into Adobe's Digital Negative format.

The support for Canon's new 5D Mark II SLR is arriving just in the nick of time for the camera itself. Photographer and blogger Rob Galbraith, citing the company, Canon will begin shipping the new cameras to US dealers on Tuesday. The US$2,700, 21-megapixel camera, with a full-frame sensor the size of a frame film and a 1080p high-definition video mode, will help Canon counter Nikon's increasingly competitive models, and it's a hotly anticipated model.

The new RAW software also supports several higher-end compact cameras: Canon PowerShot G10, Panasonic DMC-G1, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150, Panasonic DMC-FZ28, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, and Leica D-LUX 4, Adobe said. Additionally, people can save adjustment settings for future use.

The software (for Mac OS X or Windows) can be downloaded from Adobe's Web site.

BlueAnt's V1 voice-controlled headset now understands Mandarin commands

Damian Koh  |  Nov 27, 2008

Our CNET US colleagues loved the V1 so much they bestowed it with an Editors' Choice award in September. The Bluetooth headset doesn't require voice recognition training, is easy to use and the audio quality is excellent, though the reviewer did mention that the design is a little boring and the headset doesn't feel secure without the ear hook. The Mandarin version of the voice-controlled V1 is essentially all that, save that it now recognizes the Chinese language. To be honest, I hardly use Mandarin on a daily basis, but this could be a hit in the Chinese markets in Asia. The V1 will be available in Singapore next month, though if you can't wait, you can skip over to its online retail store to purchase one now.

"Star Wars"-like light syringe could target cancer

Eric Franklin  |  Nov 26, 2008

OK, the whole Star Wars thing? A little misleading.

Basically, the Herald Sun is reporting on a technology that involves firing a laser beam accurate enough to puncture a hole in an individual cell. Sounds more like The Authority--or any other Mark Millar-written comic--than Star Wars to me.

Anyway, Professor Kishan Dholakia and Dr. Frank Gunn-Moore--both of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland--say the "light saber" could be used routinely on cancer patients within the next five years.

The method would allow chemotherapy drugs to be pumped directly into cancer cells. The researchers believe hard-to-reach cancers such as that of the pancreas would especially benefit.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II available now

Leonard Goh  |  Nov 26, 2008
Some associates of mine have been waiting for the successor to the EOS 5D forever. One of them even made weird sounds like the Hulk to express his frustration: Well, the wait will soon be over as a quick check on the Web shows that this full-frame dSLR is already available in some regions.

Canon's EOS 5D Mark II will be available in your region soon. Picture credit: Canon

Engadget reported the shooter being spotted in Shanghai last week but did not mention how much it was retailing for. Members of photo enthusiast forum ClubSNAP said they received calls from vendors telling them that the Canon is in stores and that the kit lens bundle will set them back S$5,342 (US$3,574.92). For body-only, the EOS 5D Mark II will cost S$4,299 (US$2,876.93).

It was reported on ClubSNAP, too, that Hong Kong has already begun sales of this camera. Members are saying the shooter is selling for S$3,850 (US$2,576.46) for just the body.

Check back with us real soon for a review of the EOS 5D Mark II and to see how well its the full-HD video-recording feature performs.
