Belkin does wireless USB with a twist

Darius Chang  |  Apr 23, 2007

The wireless USB standard may have been finalized, but the first wave did not receive much accolades due to its ridiculously high price. Belkin, however, has found a way around this.

The Belkin's Network USB Hub foregoes the wireless USB protocol and uses the more common 802.11n wireless standard instead. The four-port peripheral allows devices such as printers, scanner, harddisks, etc. to be shared. It is backward-compatible with 802.11b/g routers as well as the company's N1 Wireless Router. The list price is US$129.99 (S$196.57) and will be available for order soon.

Intel hates boring beige boxes

Darius Chang  |  Apr 18, 2007

Intel doesn't see Viiv as merely a platform, it should be a lifestyle choice. Hence, the US$1 million prize for the company which can create a Viiv system worthy of the living room. And the winner is...

Not just inthe arena of gaming, Korea can now proudly hold its head high in the design world. Korean Trigem Computer has a winner with its Home Theater Lluon Black Crystal PC design. Resembling a speaker system, the Lluon is actually a full-fledged entertainment PC worthy of standing beside your expensive HDTV.

Should the winner fall from grace, the first runner up from Norway--the Asono Merium PC by Mesiro--is ready to take its place. Though it seems rather unimpressive, the clean sleek design coupled with a choice of warm colors may have won judges' hearts. Sneak a peek at the winners below.

Eight-core Mac Pros arrive

Rich Brown  |  Apr 11, 2007

To the surprise of exactly no one, Apple has announced an update to its Mac Pro workstation PC, moving to eight CPU cores via two 3.0GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processors. This upgrade doubles the number of processing threads from Apple's available flagship desktop. Pricing for the eight-core model begins at S$4,388 (US$3,226.47), although you can still get a quad-core Mac Pro for less. And as usual, Apple is taking orders immediately, with its Web site listing a 24-hour shipping window.

If you'd like a preview of how an eight-core Mac might perform, check out this "unofficial" eight-core Apple post that we did at the end of last year. Intel had a older quad-core Xeon chip that was compatible with the Mac Pro's motherboard, so we swapped in two of them and ran a few multicore benchmarks. As you might suspect, eight cores are indeed better than four, provided you use software that will put all of the cores to work. The chips we tested were only 2.66GHz models, so expect the real eight-core Mac Pro and its 3.0GHz Xeons to perform even better.

WUSB-Hub: World without wires

Darius Chang  |  Apr 02, 2007

The release of Y-E Data's YD-300 WUSB-Hub marks the beginning of the end for messy wires cluttering the undersides of your desktop.

Priced at 39,800 yen (S$512.67), it is certainly an expensive peripheral for a device which is, in essence, a four-port hub. The WUSB-Hub, however, is possibly the first product based on the wireless USB standard, which is supposed to allow up to 480Mbps at a maximum range of 10m. Unfortunately, early reports of this ground-breaking device claim a maximum bandwidth of 30Mbps at a distance of only a few meters. Nevertheless, it is a glimpse into a future where the only wire required for your desktop leads to the power socket.
