One DVD to install them all

Darius Chang  |  Sep 25, 2006

When Windows Vista rolls around next year, all versions of the upcoming will exist on the installation DVD, with only your product key determining which one will be installed.

Christened Windows Anytime Upgrade, this feature is meant to make it easy for consumers to change their version of the OS, without having to purchase another boxed set. The software giant, however, declined to comment if this system will make upgrading cheaper. It also deflected questions of Windows Anytime Upgrade making it easier for hackers, saying Vista was "the most secure version of Windows yet".

Apple plugs Wi-Fi vulnerability

Darius Chang  |  Sep 22, 2006

Security flaws in Apple OS X may result in Macs allowing unauthorized control over Wi-Fi.

Affecting Mac OS X 10 Panther 10.3.9 and Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.7, a trio of security flaws in Apple OS X may result in Macs allowing unauthorized control over Wi-Fi, according to Apple's security alert.

Cupertino company said: "Attackers on the wireless network may cause arbitrary code execution" which would allow an intruder to hijack the system. Currently, there are no known exploits which capitalize on this vulnerability.

Mac users are advised to update their software via Apple's software update utility in the operating system or from Apple's download site.

Seagate sets world record

Darius Chang  |  Sep 18, 2006

Utilizing perpendicular technology, Seagate lays claims for the largest-capacity storage solution currently available, setting a new world record.

In a recent demonstration, the harddisk vendor achieved 421 gigabits per square inch, which translates to a capacity of up to 40GB for 1-inch disks; 275GB for 1.8-inch storage; 500GB for 2.5-inch notebook drives and up to 2.5TB for 3.5-inch desktop disks. According to Seagate: "At 2.5TB capacity, a hard drive would be capable of storing 41,650 hours of music, 800,000 digital photographs, 4,000 hours of digital video or 1,250 video games."

These prototype drives are made using current harddisk production technology and Seagate anticipates that solutions at these density levels could begin to emerge in 2009.

Read a Sony e-book

Darius Chang  |  Sep 14, 2006

As part of the Japanese manufacturer's efforts to test new markets, the Sony Reader has high hopes to revolutionize the literary world.

The electronic reader differs from a PDA or tablet PC in that it draws power only when pages are "flipped", with the company claiming up to 7,500 page turns on a single charge. It is also significantly more portable then previous e-book attempts, maintaining the form factor of a close paperback (175.3 x 124.5 x 12.7mm) and weighs slightly over 200g. The Sony Reader is likely to retail for between US$299 (S$471.12) and US$399 (S$628.68).

Though we love all kinds of gadgets and hope the e-book concept takes off, somehow file deleting simply doesn't have the oomph of book burning sessions.

ExpressCard Media Remote For Bluetooth

Juniper Foo  |  Sep 11, 2006

Now this is one cool widget. We've seen all kinds of remotes, from voice-controlled versions to bagel-shaped ones. But this one's made just for your laptop's PC ExpressCard slot where you can park it or recharge it. So ok, most Media Center notebooks would bundle a remote. But not all do. So if you've one of those monster desktop replacements with the requisite slot, this little controller comes in handy for maneuvering your laptop's movie or music playback, or photo or Powerpoint slides, from as far as 30ft away. Sure beats line-of-sight IR remotes. Charge life: Good for one week. Recharge time: Under 2 hours. Love it.
