The accent table VAIO

Darius Chang  |  Sep 14, 2006

Editors' note :
The Sony N series is available at Sony stores from today. The Sony VAIO VGN-N17G has a white chassis with a Core Duo processor going for S$1,799 (US$1,203.91), making it one of the more affordable machines from the Japanese manufacturer.

The latest lineup from Sony--the N series--has a color scheme which is neither funky nor boring. Blending in nicely with your furniture, just be careful you do not accidentally put your coffee on top of it.

According to the Japanese vendor, the color schemes for the VAIO N notebooks were intentionally chosen to blend in with your home decor. The most interesting shade is Wenge Brown, which Sony describes as "a creamy, coffee color made to resemble wood furniture". Though details are not available, we should expect these systems to be based on Intel's Centrino Core Duo platform with a 15.4-inch display. With a suggested starting price of US$1,000 (S$1,575.65), it may be cheaper to stick some legs at the bottom and use it as a funky computer/accent table fixture. It would certainly provide more fun and games than your Micheangelo coffee table.

ASUS A8J bumps up gaming power

Darius Chang  |  Sep 14, 2006

Nvidia and ASUS have announced the availability of the Nvidia GeForce Go 7700 graphics card on the ASUS A8J series for increased video performance.

Upgrading from the previous GeForce Go 7300 GPU, the A8Js model combines a Core Duo processor with the more powerful 7700 graphics chipset to give 50 percent more pixel bandwidth, according to the video card manufacturer. This should translate to a more powerful gaming and entertainment platform for the A8J series portables.

MacBook stages a strike

Darius Chang  |  Sep 08, 2006

After several complaints, Apple is now taking reports of MacBooks suddenly shutting down seriously.

Apparently, some units of the Intel-based Apple notebooks have decided to go on strike arbitrarily, causing some users to complain of downtime and disruptions. If your laptop has been doing some unscheduled coffee breaks, contact your local AppleCare for a solution.

ToughBooks take a hit

Darius Chang  |  Sep 05, 2006

Editors' note:
Panasonic Singapore has confirmed that only notebook units sold in Japan are affected by the recall.

The image of lithium-ion notebook batteries seems to have taken a hit recently, with yet another recall of portable power cells by a laptop manufacturer.

Matsushita Electric Industrial, maker of the Panasonic ToughBook series (also known as Let’s Note in Japan), is recalling 6,000 pieces of its notebook batteries. According to the Japanese conglomerate, a small metal spring in the power cell may be dislodged if exposed to strong impact, resulting in a short circuit and possible overheating. This differs from the Sony battery recall, in which metal contamination of the cells used in Dell and Apple systems was the cause.

Matsushita’s recall affects notebooks manufactured between April and May 2005 and sold in Japan. We are awaiting word from Panasonic Singapore if units sold outside the Land of the Rising Sun are similarly affected.
