More than meets the ear?

John Chan  |  Apr 27, 2007

New from Takara Tomy is the product strangely named Transformers Music Label Frenzy and Rumble. These headphones are robots in disguise, able to transform into a Decepticon robot.

Yes, we noticed that it is a Decepticon, but we have no idea if this robot is related to the faction's famous cassette robot, Soundwave. It will be available in Japan from July, and will cost about US$35 (S$53).

iPod in gold

John Chan  |  Apr 25, 2007

Add a bit, no, make that a lot of bling to your iPod with 24-carat gold. Just hop over to Amouso, a site dedicated to making luxury portable devices. We are not talking about gold-plating here, but a hardened mirror gold finish for iPods which have the chrome back surface. These include the regular 30GB and 80GB iPods and the first-generation iPod nanos. The prices of these modified iPods range from £299.99 (S$908.44) to £399.99 (S$1,211.26). If you already have one of those MP3 players, you can just get the gold back plate which will set you back £149.99 (S$454.21) for the nano version or £199.99 (S$605.62) for the full iPod version.

Michael Robertson launches new DRM-free music service

Greg Sandoval, CNET News.com  |  Apr 23, 2007

Entrepreneur Michael Robertson is yet again launching a new online music service--one that offers digital albums stripped of security software that can be played on any music device, including iPods.

Robertson, the founder of MP3.com and MP3tunes.com, announced the launch of Anywherecd.com.

Unfortunately, his customers are required to buy complete albums without the option of buying individual songs, have such a tiny music library to choose from, and must often pay more for an album than they do at the top online music stores.

Executives are trying to figure out how much more they have to offer before music fans once again pay for music.

"Last year, I decided it was time to revisit selling music in the MP3 format," Robertson said in a statement. "I reached out to many labels and all were polite... my message was to use the MP3 format to boost sales by offering a new buying option for online music fans. If they purchase an album, they immediately get high quality MP3 files which they can own forever with the confidence that they'll work on any music device available."

It's trendy right now to attempt to offer music unrestricted by Digital Rights Management software. Two weeks ago, EMI and Apple announced that the music label would offer DRM-free songs on iTunes offer starting in May.

Soon after, Microsoft announced that it too planned to sell unsecured songs from EMI but has yet to say when.

Unprotected MP3 files will cost more. For example, Elephant by the band The White Stripes sells for US$11.95 on Robertson's new site, but costs only US$9.99 on iTunes. A customer on Anywherecd.com can also choose to buy a digital album as well as a CD version for US$14.95.

As for the small music library, Robertson said in the statement that "AnywhereCD will continue to grow and new content will be added in the near future."

Sierra iN Studio 5.0: Studio-grade iPod speakers

Nate Lanxon, CNET.co.uk  |  Apr 21, 2007

At Crave we're very fond of iPod-ready speakers and we're not averse to those that claim to be of a superior quality. How do you think we felt this morning to see a set that look like our studio monitor speakers and claim to be the most dynamic-sounding smart speaker system on the market? We felt good inside.

Sierra Sound has a history of producing high-end studio audio equipment, so theoretically it should know what it's doing designing the iN Studio 5.0 iPod speaker system (we don't think the same can be said of its capitalisation, but there you go). Of course, there's the ever-useful iPod dock built right into the top, or you could wire them into your home-cinema system, your PC... even your mobile phone if you've got one of those handy little adaptors.

These are pretty loud monsters, too, with 50W of screaming power encased in a glossy black, white or grotesquely red case.

So far these only ship in the US and cost US$399, but if they ever make it to Asia, you know where to find a review.

Timex's MP3 clock radio chimes in

David Carnoy, CNET.com  |  Apr 20, 2007

SDI Technologies, the company that brings you the iHome line of iPod speaker systems and clock radios, also has a licensing deal with Timex to create forward-thinking clock radios. The Timex TM 80BR, a clock radio that plays MP3 and WMA files from thumbdrives and SD memory cards, is one such model, and it's apparently going to be available very soon.

Aside from the SD slot, the flash drive port, and the included remote, there isn't anything terribly exciting about it. At its core it's just an inexpensive dual-alarm, AM/FM clock radio. But some people get excited about this sort of stuff.
