Photos: Hands on with the Porsche P'9521 phone

Andrew Lim  |  Oct 30, 2007

No, you're not imagining things. Porsche Design has made a mobile phone and it's not just a piece of rubbish with a Porsche logo on it--it is in fact a rather nifty clamshell handset. Crafted out of sturdy aluminium and mineral glass, the Porsche P'9521 isn't for the faint hearted, weighing 137g and measuring a somewhat chunky 47mm wide, 90mm tall and 18mm deep.

Inside, this phone packs enough features to scare off any other car-inspired phones--including a fingerprint reader, which doubles up as touch-sensitive scroll interface for navigating through the menu or your pictures.

On the back, the Porsche P'9521 sports a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED photo lights. You can spin the P'9521's screen 180 degrees as you would with a tablet laptop and use the larger main screen as a viewfinder.

Crave UK visits Nokia's R&D facility

Damian Koh  |  Oct 29, 2007

Remember we wrote about the Symbian S60 platform going touchscreen not too long ago? Well, our privileged colleagues at Crave UK had the opportunity to visit Nokia's R&D facility in Oulu, Finland, recently where they caught a quick demo of the S60 Touch user interface. The new platform allows for multiple ways of interaction, including using a stylus for handwriting recognition and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Those lucky people even got to see Frankenstein robodog wagging an Internet Tablet head. Gee. More pictures here.

The wait has finally ended. Sony Ericsson has announced that the highly anticipated K850i Cyber-shot phone is currently available in all Asia-Pacific markets at a recommended retail price of S$898 (without plan). We've just received our commercial review unit and a full review of the camera-phone will be coming up early next week. For now, content yourselves with our hands-on of the K850i here. While you're at it, check out our first looks video, too.

Nokia gets into the Asian music scene

Reuben Lee  |  Oct 26, 2007

Homegrown music talents in the Asia-Pacific region now have a new platform to showcase their latest song creations. The Independent Artists Club (IAC) Web site launched recently by Nokia aims to promote local artists in the region by allowing them to upload their songs on the Web for music fans around the world to enjoy.

The IAC program will launched in Singapore and Thailand first, before being rolled out over the next six months to selected Asia-Pacific countries including Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand.

With each IAC country launch, selected local artists will initially be invited to upload their tracks. After which the Web site will be open to all artists for song uploading. The Singapore IAC site is expected to open up for the public to upload their songs in Mid-December.

Answer the phone with a universal remote

Mike Yamamoto  |  Oct 26, 2007

We've long had a love-hate relationship with universal remotes (mostly hate), so we're conflicted over how to view this model being developed in Australia. On one hand, we hold the general view that most universal remotes are evil, as they rarely work as promised; on the other, a version like the "Telemax III" would come in mighty handy because it has a built-in handsfree phone--which, in fact, might be the only way we'd ever answer a call while watching TV.

The Telemax is still only in prototype stage, though designer Tiller + Tiller hopes to have it in production worldwide by 2009 or so. The only thing that seems a little weird is its form, which Gizmag describes as "shaped like a small tray". Then again, it could be a good way to hold a bowl of chips.
