Sony's wireless VAIO photo frame

Juniper Foo  |  Sep 05, 2008
Sony's clearly dipped its brush into its VAIO design palette for this CP1 Wi-Fi photo frame. It looks, feels and smells like a VAIO, which should go matchingly well with the rest of your VAIO collection in the house. And like all VAIOs, there's a certain expectation that you'll get what you pay for.

Besides the patently handsome aesthetics, there're wireless connectivity for streaming Internet radio and news (there's an RSS reeder), onboard stereo speakers and a mini remote to exploit the wireless option. The 7-inch LCD display itself runs into 16 million colors in 800 x 480 resolution. There's also a digital/analog clock and the ability to save energy by dimming the screen automatically when a room's lights are turned off.

Sega hopes to get "Lucky" with new robot dog

Eric Franklin  |  Sep 05, 2008
I used to be the biggest Sega fan. Starting way back in 1986 from the Sega Master System, all the way to the Dreamcast (yes, I'm that old), I've been a diehard Nintendo/NEC/Sony-hating Sega fanboy.

After the Dreamcast, our 16-year relationship ended and now the reason is painfully clear. The robots have taken over Sega, at least in Japan, and they've enacted their plan for world domination I first alluded to a few weeks back. Be afraid. Be very afraid. "Lucky" is coming, and I don't think he can be stopped. Just check out the video. Lucky is a fluffy little robot dog developed by Sega Toys. He's incredibly cute and obedient (for now at least). Lucky does tricks like handstands; he barks when spoken to; and he is subtlety racist ("herro"? come on!). All the while he is biding his time, I'm sure, until he gets the signal. A switch will go off in his head and we'll all be doomed.

Resistance is indeed futile. I mean, just look at him. How is anyone supposed to resist that? No word yet on when he'll make his debut outside of Japan, but I'm sure he has a plan for us as well.

Hello Kitty won't stop breeding

Erica Ogg  |  Sep 04, 2008
This cat has no shame.

Someone, please make it stop. (Credit: Kittyhell.com)

She continues to haunt us with her incessant need to reproduce every consumer item in existence with her likeness on it. Our mistrust of the advancing Kitty empire on Crave is well-known, but we haven't brought it up in a while. Friends, it's time.

The cat is now trying to green-wash her cheap plastic empire, calling this solar-powered cell phone recharger "eco-friendly". Well now, throwing "solar-powered" into the description certainly sounds environmentally friendly. But wait. Apparently it's good for about 500 charges, then you're supposed to throw it away and buy a new one? That's sort of the opposite of eco-friendly.

Powering the F1 night race

Reuben Lee  |  Sep 04, 2008
You've probably heard about the 1,500 lighting projectors illuminating the 5.067km street track for the upcoming Singapore F1 night race. And that at 3,000 lux each, the lights will be four times brighter than the ones used at sports stadiums. But what is powering these light projectors? What if there is a power failure?

According to a Singapore GP spokesperson, the 3.5 megawatt-hour light system for the race will be powered by 12 pairs of diesel generators. These will be installed in sound-proof containers and monitored via a main control room located at the pit building.

Since all the generators will be running simultaneously, should any one fail during the event, the others will increase their load to offset the difference in output. The use of power-lock connectors also means the devices can be interchanged quickly if a fault occurs in any of the cables. As a further precaution, engineers will be assigned to each generator.

From the look of things, the organizers are certainly not taking any chances when it comes to ensuring the F1 event runs smoothly. Now all we need is a weather God to keep the rainstorms at bay.

S$200,000 watch to premiere at F1 charity lunch

John Chan  |  Sep 04, 2008

Unlike the earlier watch we featured, this one is no Mickey Mouse. Luxury brand Chopard will be premiering its L.U.C Tourbillon Tech Twist watch during the President's Challenge F1 Charity Luncheon. This will be held on the grounds of the ceremonial home of the Singapore President on September 26. The first piece of this model will then be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to charity.

How much is it expected to fetch? Well, according to the company's spokesperson, it costs more than S$200,000. And given that there will many rich folks at this event bidding for it, you can imagine that this timekeeper will make up quite a sizeable proportion of the S$1 million the organizer will be trying to raise during the charity lunch (which will include auctions of other items, as well).

The ticker in question has parts made of 18-carat white gold and aluminum. As with many other luxury watches, you are paying for both design and the complexity of the construction. For power, you wind it. Yes, like the watches of old, there's no battery. If you don't get what the big deal about it is, don't worry, you're probably not alone. Just take a look at the picture and appreciate how pretty it is.
