Safekeep your "memories" here

Leonard Goh  |  Mar 06, 2008

We are looking forward to the day when all the electronic giants will make peace with each other and standardize the kind of memory media their gadgets use. For now, we'll have to contend with this interesting concept by Tom Kenworthy. His memory card holder slides open horizontally to reveal three drawers. These drawers have the indents of different kinds of memory media so you can rest assured your flash card won't slip out.

While there are memory media cases in the market now, most can store only a limited number and type of cards.

Although it is still in concept stage, we are hoping to see this product on shelves soon. Until then, we'll dream of the day when one memory media will rule them all.

Giving old cameras new life

Leonard Goh  |  Mar 04, 2008

What can we do with retired old cameras? Well, instead of chucking them into a corner of your cupboard or turning them into paperweights, Minnesota artist Debra Dresler has tweaked the vintage Kodak Brownie into a fully functional clock.

One look and it brings back memories (that is, if you are old enough to have owned a Brownie) of good ol' days when you had to tinker with actual knobs to snap a picture.

Display this in your living room and we bet the clock will make a great conversation piece. It's just too bad Dresler didn't think to add shutter sounds to announce the time, much like a Cuckoo clock would. Plus take note as well that the flash unit is non-functional.

As this is handmade, owning a piece of nostalgia comes with a relatively steep price tag of US$165. Polaroids next?

Singapore first in world to get Sony T300 and Alpha 350

Leonard Goh  |  Mar 04, 2008
If Singapore could, it would put this on its "first" list. Sony's highly anticipated DSC-T300 and the Alpha 350 dSLR will be launched in the city-state first, before the rest of the world gets their hands on it. Scheduled to make its appearance at the IT Show held at Suntec Convention Centre between March 6 and 9, the pricing will be made available only then.

Successor to the popular T100 and T200, the T300 offers style and functionality without compromising on features.

The T300 sports intelligent scene modes, D-Range Optimizer Plus, face detection as well as "smile shutter", a technology designed to trigger the shutter and take a picture when the camera detects a smile. The huge 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD behind the camera replaces all the menu buttons and you can frame pictures with ease on the large display. Read more about the T-300 in our first take on it.

The 14.2-megapixel Alpha 350 dSLR has Live Preview, meaning you can frame your subject using the 2.7-inch display. The screen can also be tilted to take pictures at creative angles. The ISO sensitivity ranges from 100 to 3,200, so taking pictures in dimly lit places will not be a problem. The D-Range Optimizer ensures that details in the highlight/shadow regions will not be lost. Click here to see the specifications of the Alpha 350.
