Casio sprints into the 12-megapixel digicam race

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 23, 2007

The latest Exilim EX-Z1200 joins the Sony Cyber-shot W200 and the Panasonic FX100 in the megapixel race, with a slim shooter that packs in a CCD-shift image stabilization system. For shaky hands, the Z1200 adds a motion analysis engine which adjusts the ISO and shutter speed according to the movement of a subject.

Editors' note:
We will update with Asia availability information once we have it.

An update to the EX-Z1000, the Z1200 includes a 2.8-inch LCD screen and a face-detection autofocus solution by OKI. According to Casio, the Z1200 has an Auction Best Shot mode which is designed for posting product images for sale on sites like eBay. It includes Auto Macro which automatically adjusts the focus for acquiring fine details in close-up shots to capturing large items from a distance. The images are saved in a size small enough that it's fast to load on a Web site.

The Z1200 will arrive in Singapore by end June and will be available in either silver or black. Read specs here

Panasonic DMC-FX100 punches it to 12.2-megapixel

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 22, 2007

Though it's just May, but them camera models are flying in, thick and fast. The DMC-FX100 promises high-definition photos (1,920 x 1,080-pixel) that will look good on your equally high-def TV. It offers 3.6x optical zoom and something new called Extra Optical Zoom which can punch up the optical zoom range to 7x when the capture resolution is set at 3-megapixel. According to Panasonic, this feature works not unlike a photo editing software. While the camera is set at 3-megapixel capture resolution, the camera will still shoot at 12.2-megapixel and crop out the area that is to be enlarged.

The introduction of the 12.2-megapixel FX100 also maintains the pace of the global digicam megazoom race. Panasonic promises that its newest camera will be a breeze to use for beginners with its slew of correction technologies designed to correct hand motion blur. At the heart of the new Intelligent Image Stabilization system is the Mega Optical Image Stabilizer (lens shift) and the Intelligent ISO Control (auto ISO adjustment) that acts together in concert to correct such errors.

According to Panasonic, the FX100 is expected to be available in Singapore by July and Japan in June. Read specs here

BenQ offloads its digital camera manufacturing capability to Ability

Edvarcl Heng  |  May 21, 2007

BenQ Corporation and Ability Enterprise Co, a Taiwan-based digital camera manufacturer, have jointly announced the sale of BenQ's digital camera-related R&D and manufacturing facilities to Ability. No official price was quoted for the acquisition, though the press release stated that Ability will be paying for the assets based on the determined book value on June 30.

This turn of events does not mean that the Taiwanese manufacturer will cease sales of BenQ-branded digital cameras. Instead, Sheaffer Lee, president of BenQ Corporation, explained in a press release statement: "Digital camera(s) is one of our most important and profitable lines… Ability will remain as one of our most important strategic suppliers for future BenQ-branded digital cameras."

Currently in Southeast Asia, BenQ's camera presence is limited to just Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Email enquiries to BenQ digital camera representatives in Malaysia and Thailand on the future of BenQ digicams in their respective markets were unanswered at press time.

A Reuters report highlighted that the Ability sale is part of an asset-shedding exercise by BenQ in order to raise more cash after posting losses in the last six quarters.

Vista supports Pentax RAW camera images

Stephen Shankland, CNET.com  |  May 16, 2007

Pentax has released software that lets Windows Vista read and manipulate RAW images taken directly from higher-end Pentax cameras' image sensors without in-camera processing.

Microsoft announced on its photo blog the availability of the Pentax codec used to encode and decode raw images.

RAW images are popular among professionals and enthusiasts who want more elaborate control over their photography, but supporting RAW formats is tough, mostly because there's largely no standard from one camera to the next. Pentax is unusual among digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera makers in that its high-end model, the K10D, supports Adobe Systems' DNG (digital negative) format that attempts to bring some standardization to the RAW image realm. The RAW codec now available supports the .PEF format used in several Pentax digital SLR cameras.

Adobe and Apple write their own RAW codecs, but Microsoft chose to partner with camera manufacturers to supply their own for the higher-end image-handling components in Windows Vista.
