Kodak's looking bright: New ISO 8000 EasyShare camera and ultrazooms

Amidst the flurry of camera announcements, Eastman Kodak swung in with one of its own, packing four new cameras including the Z712 and the Z885, both of which offers a dazzling ISO 8000 setting. The Z712 comes with a 12x optical zoom, OIS and a 7.1-megapixel and will be available in April in the US for US$299.95.
Other models include the Z885 which boasts a 5x optical zoom and an 8.1-megapixel sensor (US availability in May at US$199.95), the C613 with its 6.2-megapixel resolution (US availability in April at US$119.95) and the C763 that bundles in a 3x optical zoom (US availability in April at US$179.95).
Details of Asia availability were unavailable at press time.

Ricoh Caplio R6: Capturing more

Ricoh has announced the Caplio R6, a compact digicam equipped with a 7.1x wide zoom (28 - 200mm) lens barrel that would certainly enable this tiny camera to capture more than its non-wide-angled brethren. Already available in Singapore at S$799 (US$534.70), the R6 takes after its predecessor, the R5 with its CCD-shift image stabilizer, but with the addition of a face-detection feature that has been cropping up in most new digicams and a 2.7-inch screen. Internal memory has also been upped to 54MB in comparison to the R5 (26MB)

D40X: Aging the D40

Retirement. That must be what the D40 was thinking when its successor, the D40X, was announced today. Just a few months after the D40 was released, it's already old hat. The D40X goes one up on the D40 with a 10.2-megapixel sensor versus the D40's now paltry 6.1-megapixel offering. For the same-sized dimensions, the D40X packs a lower base sensitivity (ISO 100) and a faster burst mode (3fps vs. 2.5fps). The D40X is projected to launch in Asia on March 29.

Olympus rolls out new E-series dSLRs and a µ

As we reported last week, March 5 is the day of reckoning… for Olympus camera aficionados. Since the E-500 won our Editors' Choice award in 2005, we have been pining for its successor. The Japanese firm is updating its E500 with the E-510 which features live preview (framing image via LCD screen instead of the viewfinder), an in-body image stabilizer (IS) and an old friend--the Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF). Along with the E-510 is the E-410 which is pretty much akin to the former, save for the lack of an IS.
While the spotlight will be on Olympus' new dSLRs, there's also room for a new compact camera, the µ 780. As with Olympus' tradition, the 7-megapixel camera is waterproof and offers 5x optical zoom as well as a Dual Image Stabilization for IS properties.
Both the E-410 and the µ 780 will be available in May, while those eager for the E-510 will have to wait till June for its debut.
