New PowerShot and IXUS available soon

Damian Koh  |  Sep 29, 2006

If you were waiting to buy the new PowerShot G7, or any of the three IXUS cameras launched recently, well, you have to wait till mid-October. But at least you can start saving for it now.

Canon has announced at a local press launch the availability and prices of its latest lineup. At S$969 (US$648.46), the 10-megapixel PowerShot G7 isn't for everyone but targeted at enthusiasts who want to have manual controls on their shooter sans the bulk of a digital SLR.

Those who need their Titanium fix can opt for the IXUS 900 Ti which will cost S$769 (US$514.62) at launch. The other two IXUS--the 850 IS and i7 Zoom--will be priced at S$729 (US$487.85) and S$499 (US$333.94), respectively. All four cameras are slated to be available in stores from the second week of October.

Polaroid's a good chap

Damian Koh  |  Sep 29, 2006

Now who wouldn't like championing for a good cause, especially when it involves a dash of kinky pink. Polaroid's toting out four digital shooters decked in shades of femininity in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Unfortunately, charity comes with a location since you can purchase these cameras only at Circuit City, Target and Walmart in the US. Still, that shouldn't stop you from making an online purchase. Remember, it's all for a good cause.

Say goodbye to ugly pictures

Damian Koh  |  Sep 28, 2006

We swear one of these days we might not even need to lift one finger to take a picture. By just snapping our digits, or saying "take this", the camera will respond to our commands to capture a photo.

Okay, we figured perhaps only James Bond is capable of that right now. Amateur photographers, on the other hand, have something else to toast their beers to. Tribeca Labs claims its Photobot is the world's first Zero-Click picture correction software.

The program is capable of brightening all your shots, removing red-eye in your subjects, and adjusting color contrast without any human intervention. Photobot loads when you turn on your computer, runs in the background searching for new images and corrects your photos, automatically.

This is the amusing bit. If you have a Swiss Picture Bank account, Photobot will also backup your shots to the only storage service that, according to the Web site, operates in the same facilities where Swiss banks store billions of dollars in electronic assets.

Incredible as it sounds, we thought this might come in useful after all. Just imagine after a nightout, you end up having discriminating snaps of your boss with his mistress. It may be a good idea to store that picture somewhere safe, for future purposes, should you decide not to blackmail your superior immediately.

Unfortunately, the Photobot is available only as a demo now and you can download a free trial from the Web site. No word on how much the software will cost eventually but you can take consolation that it will come with three months of free subscription to the Swiss Picture Bank.

Photokina, back once again

Damian Koh  |  Sep 27, 2006

Two years can be a long wait, but, finally, the doors to the biennial photo and imaging tradeshow opened yesterday on September 26. For a total of six days, visitors to the show will be treated to a bevy of beauties, er, photo imaging-related products.

In addition to a slew of new shooters and accessories, you can also catch a glimpse of what's to come in terms of imaging media, technologies and markets for both consumers and professionals. Of course, this is also the time for manufacturers to showcase their latest cutting-edge products.

SanDisk CompactFlash tops at 16GB

Damian Koh  |  Sep 27, 2006

At US$1,050, the new 16GB SanDisk CompactFlash isn't for everyone. Still, if you are the target market for such high-capacity (read: Expensive) memory cards, you probably won't give a hoot about the price tag that comes along with it.

According to SanDisk, the new card has a minimum read/write speed of 20MB per second and will ship in December. If you don't have that much cash, you can opt for the 12GB card which will cost only US$780.

The company also announced a 4GB Ultra II SDHC card with a read/write speed of 10MB and 9MB per second, respectively. A Micromate USB 2.0 reader will ship with the purchase and you can expect the card to be available in October.
