Lenovo Netbook: Fact or fiction?

Darius Chang  |  Aug 04, 2008

Editors' note:

Turns out it's a fact after all. The IdeaPad S10 will start at S$739 (US$494.55), with shipments hitting stores in September. The 9-inch IdeaPad S9 does exist, but will be available only through B2B channels.

According to a report by PC Magazine, Lenovo is the latest to join the Netbook rat race with the IdeaPad S10. Instead of playing in the 8.9-inch arena, the Chinese maker is gunning straight for the 10-inch form factor, currently populated by the ASUS Eee PC 1000 and MSI Wind.

Or so it may seem. Though the tech publication claims that the announcement was made today and put out the report at just past 12am New York time, our Lenovo contact claims that there has been no global announcement made at all, and that this is merely a rumor at this time. Which is strange, because PC Magazine not only provided configurations (listed below) but also had images of the unit. According to the featured article, the IdeaPad S10 has the following specifications:

  • 10-inch display
  • About 1.1kg
  • Three-cell or six-cell battery (3 hours and 6 hours of uptime, respectively)
  • 85 percent keyboard size
  • 80GB or 160GB 5,400rpm harddisk
  • Two USB ports, Ethernet, Webcam, 4-in-1 card reader
  • ExpressCard slot
  • Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor
  • Up to 2GB RAM
  • US$399 for 80GB version and US$449 for 160GB model
  • Choice of pink, black and white

  • That seems mighty detailed for a mere rumor, don't you think. PC Magazine claims the ship date for the IdeaPad S10 is October this year, with a 9-inch variant available outside of the US market. Oh, and if you are still trying to figure out if this is fact or fiction, perhaps a nice little YouTube video reported by Liliputing might help.

talking about "disruptive" technology? if Lenovo really roll their way in the netbook arena, by introducing this 10-inch model on a very competitive price sub<USD500 though with HDD (a practical approach for price/feature for now) instead of SSD, this could eventually effect into price corrections of major players who are dictating the price of their netbooks now...more pressure to Asus

Nice move for Lenovo this time. Asus' EeePC should get back the crowd's attention amid newcomers

What terrible pricing in Singapore though: "The IdeaPad S10 will start at S$739 (US$543.38)". And this is retailing for US$399 in the US? Why is there such a large discrepancy? We're talking about an almost 50% increase in price compared to the US. And don't tell me it's cheaper to ship items to the US from China as compared to shipping from China to Singapore.
