1080p comes early for Samsung

Philip Wong  |  Oct 30, 2006

Just when you thought Samsung was done releasing new flat panels for its already extensive 2006 lineup, the company surprised market observers today with its new flagship Mosel N7 and F7 LCD TVs. Available from 32 to 52 inches in screen sizes, both series are potential stunners with a combination of black glossy frames and unobtrusive bar speakers. Aesthetics aside, the TVs are also loaded with dual HDMIs and come standard with integrated multislot card readers and USB ports for multimedia capability.

The higher-end F7 is also future-proofed with a 1,920 x 1,080-pixel panel for lossless video playback compatible with the next-generation Blu-ray and HD-DVD players. This ultra-high resolution is coupled with a revealing 6,000:1 contrast ratio and wide 178-degree viewing angle for optimal visual performance, rivaling those delivered by the award-winning Sony Bravia X-series.

The Samsung N7-series is now available from S$2,999 (US$2,006.96) to S$6,999 (US$4,683.80), while its full-HD counterpart will follow in November. Pricing for the latter was not available at press time.

Netgear announces new HD multimedia streamer

    Philip Wong  |  Oct 30, 2006

The upcoming Digital Entertainer EVA 700 multimedia wireless streamer is another strong contender for consumers embracing home networking and media sharing. Unlike the competition, this Viiv-certified product is designed from the ground up for ease of use, leveraging on its intuitive TV user interface and simplified device setup via Intel’s Hub Connect Technology.

This Netgear product also does High Definition via component-video and high-speed Wi-Fi-g networking, and is capable of supporting both the HD versions of Windows Media Video and MPEG-4 content. That’s besides the usual spread of multimedia formats ranging from the standard MP3, JPEG and DivX to more advanced AAC and TIFF variants.

While details on its actual launch were limited at press time, expect the EVA 700 to be released within this quarter for about US$269.

The award-winning LG RH-1F99WS has landed

    Philip Wong  |  Oct 30, 2006

So what’s the X factor behind the LG RH-1F99WS DVR’s famed EISA award? Without reciting its long list of credentials off the specs sheet, there is the 250GB hard drive capable of storing 125 hours of high-quality Standard Play clips. If recording endurance is all that matters, perhaps the super-extended 620 hours of MPEG-4 recordings is exactly what you’re looking for.

Even with a sizable hard drive, the tendency of running out of storage is always an issue for all home-recording enthusiasts. For this matter, LG has equipped the recorder with Super Multi DVD-recordable compatibility. Out-the-box, it supports DVD-RAM/+RW/-RW/+R/-R/+R DL media with a reasonable storage capacity of up to 6 hours on dual layers.

If you are sourcing for a recorder for an early X’mas upgrade or gift, check out the RH-1F99WS now available for S$999 (US$668.54).

    Digital shower Grohtherm Wireless

    Juniper Foo  |  Oct 30, 2006

Sorry, you can't surf and shower with this. What the Digital Shower Groththerm Wireless does is let you preset--by remote control--the temperature for your next bath, besides customizing different settings for the rest of the family. Which is a really nice convenience to have, if you happen to have US$1,376 lying around somewhere. Just make sure the remote's beyond junior's reach. Else you're likely to get a rude awakening quicker than you can say wireless be damned.
