Automatic Door

Juniper Foo  |  Jun 16, 2006

Ali Baba and his 40 thieves might have had an easier time entering and leaving the cave had it sported inventor Rikiya Fukuda's Automatic Door. There's almost minimal wear-and-tear on the doorway since Fukuda's invention opens just enough to fit the exact shape of the person or object going through. From what we understand, it employs a motion-detecting portal that saves energy and keeps the door from opening and shutting all the way. It's still in prototype mode, but knowing the Japanese efficiency, that day shouldn't be too far off when saying "open sesame" may never be quite the same experience again.
