About the writer
Darius Chang is a notebook expert who occasionally dabbles in smaller mobile devices.

With more and more functions crammed in today's handsets, mobile phone look set to be even more sophisticated in the new future, if the wide array of convergent devices shown at CommunicAsia2006 is anything to go by.

A phone so simple, it may not even need a user guide.

But what about the older phones? With failing eyesight and reduced tactile senses, even the entry-level mobiles may be a hassle to figure out. The trend being convergence, soon even more features like IPTV and WiMax functions will be added to the mix. The fact that some handsets use a small keypad to maximize screen size doesn't help matters much.

Enter Kyocera. With an eye on the older population, the A101K is a basic phone in the most literal sense. Doing away with a display, the buttons are oversized for easy dialing and the interface is designed to be exceptionally simple to reduce the learning curve.

Technical specifications:

  • Large oversized keypad
  • CDMA2000 network support
  • 125 x 46 x 15mm
  • 78g with battery
