China fears Google, Baidu and others could damage mental health of young
Jan 6, 2009 11:27
It's been 2009 for a little less than a week and already the folks in charge of "harmonizing" China's Internet are taking their jobs far too seriously.
From Danwei.org: China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center (中国互联网违法和不良信息举报中心), under the Internet Society of China, has announced a list of Web sites which contain "large amounts of low and vulgar content that violates social morality and damages the physical and mental health of youths."
The list includes a virtual Who's Who of the Chinese Internet, including domestic search giant Baidu and its little-known competitor Google China. It goes on to warn the sites that should they not remove the "low and vulgar" content immediately, they will be forced to shut down.

What is Google China thinking?
Dec 22, 2008 09:47

In cruising around the Internet I came across a humorous post at The Next Web asking, "What is Google thinking?". The author points out that Google has some rather interesting "suggestions" for the simple phrase "How long does..."
The auto-complete feature that Google recently rolled out worldwide has been an integrated part of Google.cn for quite some time. Longer active history or not, I was curious to see what Google China had on its mind using the same phrase in Chinese (duo chang shi jian)?"

Shanghai woman refuses to be held captiva by tower, viral ad?
Dec 16, 2008 11:44
With marketing budgets being slashed in the "new economy", low-cost/high-return word-of-mouth advertising is going to be more relevant than ever.
A new viral video spreading its way across Chinese forums shows a Shanghai woman arguing with a tow truck driver. Despite her Chevrolet Captiva's rear wheels being hitched to the tow truck, she jumps in her SUV and drives away, with tow truck in tow.

MS Windows hacking Chinese computers or just Chinese pricing?
Dec 12, 2008 13:01
When in October Microsoft, via their Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) engine, began blacking out pirated versions of their operating system across China, you would have thought they were poisoning babies with the upheaval it caused.
A lawyer in Beijing went so far as to call it a crime and to cry out "That's not fair."
But it is fair. You can't legitimately expect a company not to do everything in its power to prevent the illegal sale and use of its product.

Qifang becomes first Chinese WEF Technology Pioneer
Dec 4, 2008 16:50

The World Economic Forum has just announced Shanghai-based Qifang as one of its prestigious Technology Pioneers of 2009. Joining the ranks of past winners (Google, Wikipedia, Mozilla), Qifang is the first Chinese company to receive the honor.
Qifang, which takes its name from the poem "百花齊放,百家爭鳴 (Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend)", is a Web service that operates under a simple, yet excellent, principle: "Everyone should be able to get an education, no matter their financial means."

About Ryan McLaughlin
About to enter year five of his eight-month stay in China, Ryan McLaughlin often wonders if there's something in the water that makes it so difficult to leave the PRC. A writer, Web developer and avid blogger, he spends more time hooked to the Net than he does sleeping or eating combined. When not tweaking the Lost Laowai China expat community, or his China-focused social bookmarking baby, Hao Hao Report, he can usually be found cooking up topics for his other blog, or seeking the approval of strangers on twitter.
