Death of EGM and the future of print magazines

If you're an avid gamer, then you're probably just as shocked as I am by the news that Electronic Gaming Monthly is now dead.

It was my Online Platforms Manager Kevin Codamon who broke the bad news to me yesterday when I walked into our office, and it was definitely staggering to those like us who were weaned on the magazine. I read Kevin's blog post to know more about how Ziff Davis sold its 1UP online network of gaming sites, which includes the online version of EGM, to their competitor, Hearst-owned UGO Entertainment. What's more shocking is that Ziff Davis has decided to discontinue EGM, meaning this January issue is the iconic print magazine's last. The irony is that the magazine is just one month away from its 20th anniversary, but no one knows yet what will happen to the unpublished February 2009 20th anniversary issue.

FHM Philippines babe offers free downloadable calendar

Now this is a nice way to greet people a Happy New Year.

My friend Sofie Garrucho, who is an avid gamer and FHM Philippines babe, is celebrating the new year by offering a free downloadable monthly calendar. You can download a desktop wallpaper version as well as a high-res one that you can print out and, um, hang on your wall. This is FHM, OK. So if racey pics and articles offend you, don't click on the link.

Grounding the Singapore Flyer

On Sunday, my wife, daughter and I, together with two journalists from the Philippines, rode on the Singapore Flyer, the world's tallest observation wheel, for the very first time.

Good thing we didn't decide to do this two days later, when a malfunction stranded 173 passengers on board the Singapore Flyer for nearly seven hours on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Celebrating your birthday on live video

Yup, I'm another year older today--older and wiser, I hope.

And since today also happens to be Day 3 of my company's very first Christmas online show, LIVE! The Show: Merry LU! Christmas!, I'll be celebrating this day not just with my wife Ellen and daughter Sam, and with my friends and colleagues, but also the members of the big LU! online community who will be tuning in to the live video stream and reading the live blog.

If you have time, do tune in and join in the fun, while also getting some insight into the big online gaming community in the Philippines. The video stream and live blog will start at around 10am every day until Friday, Dec 19.

Frankly, I believe this kind of virtual celebration will be the norm for many of us in the near future, since our loved ones may be in other countries and a growing number of our friends may be people we've never even met in real life. Welcome to birthday celebrations in the digital age. Read more »

Gamers also real-world achievers

Forget the old stereotypes about gamers as people who have no lives. Gaming is becoming more and more mainstream, and having a virtual life in online games doesn't stop people from achieving great success IRL (in real life).

Which is why I'm happy to announce that Filipino composer Diwa De Leon, who is better known in the online gaming world as Master Diwa and is the grandson of one of our country's National Artists for Music, bagged the Best Musical Score Award in the Cinema One Awards.
